What Is A Website SEO Silo Structure?
A website SEO silo structure is a logical way to organize your website into a hierarchy that makes the top pages more relevant to search engines giving you a better chance of ranking higher for search terms related to the topic.
The silo website structure is usually separated into categories, then sub-categories then supporting pages.
In this example, each category would be an SEO silo structure.
Keep in mind this website structure can be set up a bit different on a blog compared to a website but it’s ultimately aimed at the same goal.
To make the categories more relevant by expanding on subtopics and even supporting pages within those sub-topics
But the website might have product pages linking together while the blog would have posts linking together.
These SEO silo structured pages are then linked together to share the SEO value throughout the pages giving the website a higher chance of ranking for other related and long-tail keywords.
The end goal is to get the crawler to find the search engine optimized website structure through links on and off the site.
Then make sure the crawler or SEO spider can move around the site structure and accurately index what is finds under certain topics and keywords.
This is how a webmaster gets traffic to the site from organic search.
Before you start a WordPress blog or website it’s best practice to think about keywords and plan out your website structure which SEO in mind.
What Does Google Say About Site Structure For SEO?
Here are the steps to a Google-friendly site.
1. Give visitors the information they’re looking for
- Provide high-quality content on the homepage as the most important thing to do.
- Create a helpful information-rich site that clearly and accurately describes your topic.
- Think about words users would type to find your site and include them on your page.
2. Make sure that other sites link to yours
- Links help their crawlers find your site
- A link is like a vote from site A to site B
- They can distinguish from natural links and unnatural links
- Unnatural links to your site are links placed there specifically to make your site look more popular to search engines
3. Make your site easily accessible
- Build your site with logical link structure (SEO silo structure)
- Every page should be reachable from at least one static link (interlinking)
4. Things To Avoid
- Filling up your pages with a list of keywords
- Attempt to cloak pages
- Services that use shady tactics which can result in being banned from the index
- Not using Alt attributes for describing pictures
- Do not create multiple copies of a page under different URLs (Duplicate Content)

Website Silo Structure Examples
Marketers create a whole bunch of names and crazy different ways to interlink pages and posts.
They are all just made up and serve no purpose but to confuse people trying to learn or market the “new system” for structuring your silo.
What you need to understand is you have a piece of “pillar content”.
This pillar content may be structured into different “topics”.
Those topics may be expanded on with “supporting pages”
Then these pages or posts are interlinked together which is what Google says to do anyway.
“Every page should be reachable from at least one static link”
This helps spread the SEO value, link equity, link juice, domain authority or whatever you want to call it around.
These “silos” help keep the content super relevant and help you to rank for more terms, competitive terms and long-tail versions of those terms more easily.
An example of a silo looks like this. (From Mangools Blog)
You can see the colors separate the categories or SEO silos.
Then what you are seeing as cluster content would be the supporting pages.
These supporting pages are usually long tail keywords that link back to the pillar content which is usually a more competitive keyword.
If you are using Rankmath SEO plugin it makes this very easy to mark a post as pillar content and get suggested ways to structure the links.
How To Find Keywords To Optimize Your Silo Structure
Finding keywords to optimize your website structure into a silo is actually easy.
This is because Google literally gives them to us.
Just do a search for how to structure a website and you get this on the bottom of search results.
These are all topics you could expand on that people are actually searching for that are related to your main search.
If you wanted to be the authority on how to structure a website you could create pillar content on the topic, then expand on it using the other related searches.
Another way to get long-tail keywords and topics people are actually searching for is to look into the people also ask section.
You can find people also ask right under the main search.
If you click on the arrows on the right side it will just keep popping out more questions people are typing into search.
Answering questions and solving people’s problems is a great way to get traffic flowing to your website.
URL Structure Best Practices
The URL structure of your domain’s links is also a very important part of SEO.
Most CMS or content management system will give you an ugly URL by default.
It may look something like this yourdomain.com/p=1
As you can already see the URL structure above gives no information to a user or search crawler about the page.
You will want to structure your website URL’s for SEO like this yourdomian.com/keyword-friendly-url
If you are using WordPress and have a small site the answer to this is to just make sure your permalink settings are set to %postname%.
If your website is larger and has a lot of categories you may want to set your URL’s a bit differently to be search engine optimized.
In this case, you would use the %category%postname%% setting.
It would look more like this yourdomain.com/category/keyword-friendly-url
If you are using WordPress you also want to make sure you have an SEO plugin like RankMath or Yoast to helps.
These plugins will help with no indexing archive and tag pages, redirections, meta titles and descriptions as well.
Always remember to interlink the new page from another page URL with a descriptive keyword too.
If you haven’t done so already you should submit a sitemap to Google after you get your URL structure in order.
How Do I SILO MY WordPress Site
You can add a silo website structure to your WordPress site many different ways.
When you see a related post widget at the bottom of the page linking to other related posts, guess what it’s doing?
Yup, creating an SEO silo structure.
You can easily manage this Silo structure in WordPress using widgets and plugins.
You can even add links and recent posts to your sidebar through the widgets dashboard if you’d like.
This will power up your new posts from the homepage.
Sometimes people get lazy and you will even find a bunch of URL’s added to the bottom of the posts linking to other posts.
I don’t like the look but it’s still creating a silo and helping their SEO.
If you want to manually create a silo that’s cool too.
Simply figure out the main category page and mark it as “pillar content” if your using RankMath this is easy.
It will even give you ideas on which posts are relevant to link to as you go.
The idea here is to close the loop of the posts related to a topic with internal links.
It helps me to think about silos like this.
If I was a search engine spider and I hit a category then started moving through the internal links of the related posts, is there a spot where I hit a page and it doesn’t link back to the pillar content or another related post?
If you find a spot like this, then that’s where you close the loop and finish your silo.
Since some pages will be more popular than others, this will help boost the not so popular pages using the page authority from the more popular pages.
Silo structures and websites are all about links and navigation.
Good SEO silo structure makes it easy for all your pages to be found by search crawlers and users to navigate.
And if you created SEO friendly URL’s to help them both out with some backlinks on other websites to your content then you are pretty much on your way to getting quality search engine traffic
